U.S. cruises past Sweden to secure berth in Olympic women’s hockey final

We are one half of the way to a U.S.-Canada women’s hockey gold-medal rematch.

The Americans cruised to a 5-0 win over Sweden on Monday, securing a spot in Thursday’s Olympic final.

Canada faces Switzerland later Monday (3:10 p.m. ET / 12:10 p.m. PT, CBC Gem, Sportsnet+) in the other semifinal for a chance to reach the final and defend its Olympic gold.

The U.S. took control of its contest against Sweden with a four-goal second period, including three markers within three minutes.

Cayla Barnes, Taylor Heise, Abbey Murphy, Kendall Coyne-Schofield and Hayley Scamurra all found the back of the net for the U.S.

Goalie Aerin Frankel made 21 saves to secure the shutout win.

Canada and the U.S. have met in every final but one since the sport was introduced on the Olympic program in 1998. The Canadians own five gold medals to the Americans’ two.

Sweden will await the loser of Canada-Switzerland in the bronze-medal game on Thursday.
