Gulf qualifiers for FIBA U18 Asia Cup set to tip off in Doha on July 25

Doha, Qatar: The organizing committee of the Gulf qualifying tournament for the FIBA U18 Asia Cup has approved the competition schedule for the championship, which will be held in Doha from July 25-30, 2026, after being postponed from its original dates of July 17-22.

The tournament carries added significance as the official qualifier for the FIBA U18 Asia Cup, which will be hosted by India in August. ipl-today.in

Five Gulf national teams- Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman- will compete for three direct berths to the continental championship.

The tournament will be played in a single round-robin format, with the top three teams advancing to the FIBA U18 Asia Cup. The event is expected to feature highly competitive matchups that highlight the continued growth of Gulf basketball at the youth level.

Qatar will open their qualifying campaign against Saudi Arabia on Sunday, July 26. The team will then face Kuwait the following day, take on Oman on Wednesday, July 29, and wrap up their campaign against Bahrain on Thursday, July 30.

The tournament will tip off on Saturday, July 25, with Kuwait facing Oman, followed by Saudi Arabia taking on Bahrain.
The stakes extend well beyond qualification for the FIBA U18 Asia Cup.

The continental championship also serves as the final qualifying tournament for the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup, with the top four finishers earning spots at the global event, which will be held in the Czech Republic from June 26 to July 4, 2027.

As part of their preparations for the Gulf qualifying tournament, Qatar's U18 national team continue training in Doha after returning from a training camp in Yalova, Turkiye, held from July 6 to 15.

Qatar's roster includes 11 players: Tamim Ashraf Abu Issa, Meshaal Khalid Al Mughni, Moaz Omar Mousa, Azzam Mohammed Yaken, Ziyad Tamer Al Johari, Mohammed Saeed Badri, Mahmoud Tamer Ibrahim, Amer Ibrahim Mousa, Owen Ikina, Youssef Walid Abdelqader, and Shahi Mohammed.

Los Angeles: Spain coasted past Austria and into the World Cup last 16 on Thursday, thoroughly outclassing their opponents in a 3-0 knockout win with a brace from Mikel Oyarzabal and a Pedro Porro header.

The European champions controlled possession and sliced through the Austrian defense in a typically dominant performance in Los Angeles, as Hollywood stars Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and singer Rosalia cheered on.

The win -- which could have been by a greater margin, with a disallowed goal and a free kick off the woodwork -- sets up a tantalizing round-of-16 clash with either Portugal or Croatia.

"We played a magnificent match. I am happy because, in every aspect, we came close to perfection," said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente.

"Every match from now on will be more complicated. Every match will be a bit more demanding. We are moving into a more critical phase" of the World Cup, he added.

The SoFi Stadium was a sea of red and excitement was sky-high over the first visit by a bona fide World Cup favorite to America's second city.

Spain ratcheted up the pressure gradually through the first half, creating a string of chances after the first hydration break.

Marc Cucurella thought he had scored from a Lamine Yamal corner, but Pau Cubarsi was judged to have encroached on Austria's goalkeeper.

Alexander Schlager then made a superb diving save, pushing Oyarzabal's low shot around the post.

Austria's defense finally buckled in the 36th minute. Pedri pinged a ball wide left to Cucurella, whose cross to Oyarzabal was calmly side-footed past the 'keeper.

Spain's dominance grew further, with Yamal tormenting the Austrians, mainly from the right flank.

An Alex Baena free kick hit the crossbar, and Yamal's close-range follow-up shot was well saved.

Austria spurned a rare chance at the other end. Romano Schmid played in a late-arriving and unmarked Stefan Posch, but a terrible first touch meant he lost the ball before even attempting a shot.

After the break Spain continued knocking on the door without quite putting the game to rest.

Austria sent on two giant strikers -- Sasa Kalajdzic and Marko Arnautovic -- and immediately went long, with Kalajdzic putting a header over the bar.

But in the 66th minute, Spain struck again. Baena lifted a cross onto the head of Pedro Porro, who nodded in his first goal for Spain.

Some dogged defending kept the scoreline respectable, including a goalline clearance by David Alaba from Yamal, who was substituted off to rest moments later.

Spain sprayed passes around the pitch as the final minutes ticked down, eliciting "Oles" from the crowd, as attention turned to a sterner test on Monday in Dallas.

In the 89th minute, a pinpoint Cucurella cross found a completely unmarked Oyarzabal in the penalty area, who slotted the ball home.

Despite the superb win, De la Fuente ominously told a press conference that his Spain side can still get better "in every area."

"That is our spirit -- the belief that we haven't hit our ceiling yet. We need to improve naturally. We are ambitious," he said.

وقال الرميحي إنه تشرف بالعمل سنوات طويلة تحت قيادة الأمير الوالد في مواقع ومسؤوليات مختلفة، سواء في المجال الإعلامي أو الرياضي، كما حظي بشرف العمل سكرتيراً لسموه لشؤون المتابعة بالديوان الأميري، الأمر الذي أتاح له أن يلمس عن قرب صفات القائد الإنسان، وصاحب الرؤية الثاقبة، الذي كان يؤمن بأن خدمة الوطن مسؤولية وأمانة قبل أن تكون منصباً.

«قائد يؤمن بالإنسان «
وأوضح الرميحي أن الأمير الوالد كان يرى أن الإنسان هو الثروة الحقيقية للوطن، ولذلك جعل الاستثمار في الإنسان أساس كل مشروع تنموي، فشهدت قطر نهضة غير مسبوقة في التعليم والصحة والبنية التحتية والاقتصاد والإعلام والثقافة والرياضة، حتى أصبحت نموذجاً عالمياً في التنمية الشاملة.
وأضاف أن سموه لم يكن ينظر إلى المستقبل بعين الحاضر فقط، بل كان يخطط لعقود قادمة، وهو ما يفسر استمرار ثمار تلك الرؤية حتى اليوم، حيث ما تزال المؤسسات التي أسسها والمشروعات التي أطلقها تؤدي دورها بكفاءة، وتواصل تحقيق أهدافها في خدمة الوطن والمواطن.
«الإعلام شريك في النهضة»
وأشار الرميحي إلى أن الأمير الوالد منح الإعلام اهتماماً كبيراً، إيماناً منه بدوره في بناء الوعي الوطني ونقل الصورة الحقيقية لدولة قطر إلى العالم، فشهد القطاع الإعلامي تطوراً كبيراً، وأصبحت قطر تمتلك حضوراً إعلامياً مؤثراً على المستويين الإقليمي والدولي.
وأكد أن الأمير الوالد كان قريباً من الإعلاميين، يستمع إلى آرائهم، ويشجع المبادرات التي تعزز رسالة الإعلام المسؤول، وكان يؤمن بأن الكلمة الصادقة شريك أساسي في بناء الدولة الحديثة.

«الرياضة مشروع وطني متكامل»
وأضاف الرميحي أن الأمير الوالد لم ينظر إلى الرياضة باعتبارها منافسات وميداليات فقط، وإنما جعلها مشروعاً وطنياً متكاملاً يرسخ قيم الانتماء، ويعزز الحضور الدولي للدولة، ولذلك شهدت قطر في عهده طفرة رياضية غير مسبوقة، استضافت خلالها أكبر البطولات القارية والعالمية، وأصبحت مركزاً رياضياً يحظى بثقة العالم.

وأوضح أن الإنجازات الرياضية التي تعيشها قطر اليوم ليست وليدة اللحظة، وإنما هي امتداد لرؤية استراتيجية بعيدة المدى وضع أسسها الأمير الوالد، وآمن بها حتى أصبحت واقعاً يفتخر به الجميع.

واختتم الرميحي تصريحه قائلاً إن أعظم ما تركه الأمير الوالد ليس المباني أو المشروعات، وإنما الإرث الوطني الذي أصبح جزءاً من هوية قطر الحديثة، مؤكداً أن مسيرة البناء والتنمية تتواصل بقيادة حضرة صاحب السمو الشيخ تميم بن حمد آل ثاني أمير البلاد المفدى، حفظه الله، الذي واصل النهج ذاته، محافظاً على المكتسبات، ومضيفاً إليها إنجازات جديدة عززت مكانة الدولة على مختلف المستويات، ويشهد لسموه، حفظه الله، جهوده الواسعة والمخلصة في خدمة الوطن وحرصه على رفاهية شعبه، فاصبحت قطر، بفضلٍ من الله، ثم بفضل سياسته الحكيمة تتربع على الصدارة عالمياً في مستويات عده كالخدمات الصحية والاجتماعية والتعليمية وغيرها، ناهيك عن كون قطر أكبر دول العالم في مستوى دخل الفرد.
لذا يعتبر صاحب السمو الشيخ تميم بن حمد آل ثاني أحد أبرز الشخصيات العالمية التي دعمت وحافظت وحققت لبلاده في سنوات قليلة مالم تحققه دول في مراحل مختلفه، كما يؤكد على النظرة الثاقبة لسمو الأمير الوالد رحمه الله، كان بعيد النظر عندما سلم امانة الحكم لولي عهده ثقةً في امكانياته الإدارية وسعة افقه ورحابة صدره وحزمه في معالجة القضايا التي تمس امن الوطن او المواطن.

Doha, Qatar: The showpiece at the New York New Jersey Stadium, kicking off at 10pm Qatar time, will be the 104th and final match of the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup. Argentina are aiming to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup, while Spain are bidding to lift the trophy for only the second time after their historic triumph in South Africa 16 years ago.

Much attention will naturally focus on Messi and Yamal. The veteran chasing one final World Cup triumph and the teenager widely regarded as one of football’s brightest talents represent two generations sharing the biggest stage in the sport.

History offers little between the two nations at the World Cup. Their only previous meeting came in the 1966 tournament, when Argentina claimed a 2-1 victory. They have met frequently in friendlies since then, with Spain holding the advantage, including a memorable 6-1 win in Madrid in 2018.

None of those results, however, will matter when they step onto the field tonight. De la Fuente said he has “nothing but admiration” for Argentina and Scaloni, believing both finalists will produce a contest in which “talent and good football will rule over everything else.”
