Report: Padres sign ex-Blue Jay Ty France to minor-league deal

Ty France will be playing for a fifth team in three seasons.

The former Toronto Blue Jays first baseman signed a minor-league deal with the San Diego Padres, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported on Monday.

The contract includes an invite to spring training, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic.

France was traded from the Minnesota Twins to the Blue Jays along with reliever Louis Varland for a return of left-handed pitching prospect Kendry Rojas at least year’s trade deadline.

The 31-year-old former all-star wasn’t rostered for the American League Division Series or Championship Series, but was included as a bench bat on the World Series roster to help counter the glut of lefties available out of the Dodgers bullpen.

France had only four plate appearances in the Fall Classic, going 1-for-4 and driving in a run with a pinch-hit fielder’s choice in the Blue Jays 6-2 Game 4 win.

The reigning AL Gold Glove winner at first base, France also slashed .257/.320/.360 with seven home runs and 52 RBIs in 138 games split between the Twins and Blue Jays.

An all-star with the Seattle Mariners in 2022, France has 81 home runs, 364 RBIs and a .262/.334/.400 slash line over 840 career games with the Blue Jays, Twins, Mariners, Cincinnati Reds and Padres.

He began his career with San Diego in 2019.
