Alexandra Eala’s rise has been one of the highlights of the season so far, and she has quickly become a fan favourite wherever she plays.
Early comparisons to Coco Gauff are not just about her playing style – it is the crowds too. Fans were lining up just to catch a glimpse of her matches at the Australian Open.
That trend has not slowed down. Eala was a major draw in Abu Dhabi, Manila, and Dubai, establishing herself as one of tennis’ most marketable names right now.
But with that kind of attention comes pressure. And there have already been warnings that the demands of fame could become a challenge for her to manage.
Alexandra Eala told her growing fanbase may become overwhelming
Sky Sports Tennis’ Gigi Salmon spoke to Tennis365 about Eala’s impressive rise, saying: “I would say, in terms of her appeal, the crowds that follow her, she might already be the biggest star.
“Coco Gauff said after one of her matches recently that she was really sorry for holding up a match with Alex and promise the fans that she would be out soon.
“Players are already saying, which they used to say with Roger Federer, I know you didn’t come to support me, but thank you very much. I remember Miami last year.
“I spoke to her a few times on that run through to the semi-final and the crowds were phenomenal. And this year in the Middle East, it’s been sensational.”
But Salmon did add a note of caution though over what being so popular can mean for an athlete during competition.
“In Dubai, it was like a pop concert. It was like a Taylor Swift was playing. People were screaming and maybe that can become a burden at some point, but I like the fact that at the moment, she just seems to be flourishing,” she added.
“She thanked them all and she’s a superstar. I just think she’s got everything. She hits a big ball. She’s training at the Rafael Nadal Academy, we know she’s done it for a few years, but I think she can go far.”
With a World No. 31 ranking, Eala has secured a seeded entry and a first-round bye at her next appearance, which will be at Indian Wells.
Alexandra Eala tipped to step into Emma Raducanu’s void as Nike’s next big name
Emma Raducanu’s move from Nike to Uniqlo made headlines earlier this year and has opened the door for someone new to take her place as the American brand’s breakout star.
Eala, already under contract with Nike, looks set to become a key part of their future plans if she maintains her current form. And given how quickly her profile is rising, that could happen sooner rather than later.
She recently shared a video tour of Nike’s US headquarters ahead of Indian Wells, giving fans an inside look at their facilities and hinting at even closer ties with the company going forward.
Raducanu may have captured a Grand Slam title early in her career, but Eala is starting to build similar momentum in terms of commercial value and public attention. With time on her side at just 20 years old, she still has plenty of room to grow both on and off the court.
