There are roughly 23 games remaining in the regular season, and the playoff picture is coming into focus. Teams atop the Eastern and Western Conferences are solidifying their seedings, while teams heading for their respective conference’s play-in tournaments are doing their best to reach the sixth seed and stay out of the play-in games. At this point in the season, health is the most important factor a team can have before the playoffs begin. As the league enters March, here are the NBA Finals power rankings.

20. Portland Trail Blazers
The five teams ranked behind Portland in the Western Conference have entered tank mode. Heading for the play-in tournament, the Trail Blazers are looking to end the season on a strong note. The team must be at its best to make it through the play-in games and into the playoffs.
19. Los Angeles Clippers
It is unlikely the Clippers will improve their record and stay out of the play-in games. The team lacks offensive firepower and ranks 27th in offensive efficiency. Los Angeles can reach the playoffs, but a quick exit is likely.
18. Charlotte Hornets
Charlotte has been on a mission and is close to a .500 record. After months of the offense looking stale, the Hornets have increased their offensive efficiency. The team is looking like last season’s version of Orlando.
17. Atlanta Hawks
Atlanta is heating up, and Jalen Johnson has gone on a tear. The one glaring issue is the team’s defense. If the team fails to survive the play-in tournament, defense will be the culprit.
16. Golden State Warriors
Stephen Curry hasn’t played since January 30th, and the team continues to tread water until he returns. The teams above Golden State are too talented to slip up and allow the Warriors to find themselves in the Western Conference’s 6th seed. The team doesn’t have the depth to be real contenders in the playoffs.
15. Miami Heat
Miami is the favorite to make it out of the Eastern Conference play-in tournament. The team’s offense ranks 2nd in efficiency, and coach Erik Spoelstra always gets the best out of his roster. The biggest knock on the Heat is defense.
14. Orlando Magic
The Magic are young, talented, and inconsistent. The offense can look elite, but can quickly fail the team late in games. The team’s defense has taken a step back after being one of the league’s best the past few seasons.
13. Philadelphia 76ers
Tyrese Maxey has carried Philadelphia throughout the season. He’s posted MVP numbers and will be a finalist for the prestigious award. The 76ers must improve their defensive efficiency in the playoffs.
12. Phoenix Suns
The Suns continue to flirt with the Western Conference’s 6th seed. The Lakers continue to hold the spot, and the Suns haven’t found an answer to overtake them. The Suns’ defense ranks among the league’s best, but their offense is inconsistent.
11. Toronto Raptors
Toronto has ranked in the Eastern Conference’s top six throughout the season. They are currently holding onto the 5th seed while Philadelphia ranks 6th. The Raptors will be a tough series matchup for any Eastern Conference foe.
10. Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers’ offense and defense are mediocre. They win games, but do not pose the same threat at Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Houston, Minnesota, and Denver. It’s unlikely they win their first playoff series.
9. Denver Nuggets
The Nuggets have struggled over their last 10 games, but the offense ranks 1st in efficiency. The team’s downfall comes on defense. Given the team’s experience, they will have a chance in every playoff series.
8. Cleveland Cavaliers
Cleveland’s increased efficiency has them chasing Boston and New York in the Eastern Conference. The Cavaliers are on a tear and are doing it on both ends of the court. The team wants nothing more than to prove last season’s first-round exit was a fluke.
7. Minnesota Timberwolves
Minnesota’s offense has carried the team over its last 10 games. The team has jumped into the Western Conference’s 4th seed and is within reach of the 3rd seed. The Timberwolves are preparing to reach the Conference Finals against either Oklahoma City or San Antonio.
6. Houston Rockets
Defense is Houston’s calling card, and the team ranks 3rd in efficiency. They are as consistent as any team on both ends of the court and rely on their core. In the playoffs, there will be questions surrounding the team’s bench depth.
5. New York Knicks
New York is as consistent as any NBA team. They rank in the top ten in offensive and defensive efficiency. The Knicks have their work cut out for them, but they have the roster to reach the Eastern Conference Finals.
4. Boston Celtics
Boston’s trimming the gap between them and Detroit for the Eastern Conference’s top seed. Still, Detroit hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. The Celtics are headed as the 2nd seed in the Eastern Conference.
3. San Antonio Spurs
San Antonio’s domination over its last 10 games has moved them within three games of Oklahoma City. The team continues to outplay opponents, and Victor Wembanyama is stating his case for NBA MVP. If the Spurs enter the playoffs fully healthy, they can reach the Western Conference Finals.
2. Oklahoma City Thunder
Oklahoma City continues to hold onto its Western Conference lead. However, San Antonio is narrowing the gap. The Thunder’s experience makes them the favorite to repeat as Western Conference champions.
1. Detroit Pistons
Detroit sits atop the NBA due to its winning percentage. They have played two fewer games than Oklahoma City, but are still one of the league’s most dominant teams. As of now, the Eastern Conference will go through Detroit.
