This will be Woods’ first NFL coaching job after retiring as a player on Feb. 17. Woods played the last two active seasons of his career with the Houston Texans. He signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2025 season but did not play in a game after the franchise released him in August.

Woods played five seasons with the Rams from 2017-21.

The announcement also revealed that Kliff Kingsbury will serve as Sean McVay’s assistant head coach next season. It had been previously reported that Kingsbury would be part of the Rams’ coaching staff in 2026 but his role within the staff had not been reported.

Woods Signed A One-Day Contract to Retire With the Rams

Woods signed a one-day contract with the Rams to retire with the franchise on Tuesday.

McVay took over as the Rams’ head coach in 2017 when Woods signed with the team as a free agent from the Buffalo Bills. Therefore, McVay and Woods are familiar with each other.

In 2018 and 2019, Woods had back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons with the Rams. He was also part of the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI championship team. Woods suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon tear in mid-November of that season, so he did not compete during the playoffs.
