Kansas Chiefs make decision on Jawaan Taylor

The NFL’s new league year is set to begin next Wednesday. Teams will have to make multiple moves to be cap-compliant and add free agents.

The Kansas City Chiefs currently sit at $5M over the salary cap limit. On Monday, they made a decision with their Super Bowl Champion offensive tackle.

The Chiefs have released Jawaan Taylor. Taylor has been the starting right tackle since 2023, and they decided to move on from the steady starter–forgoing an extension or restructure.

The move saves $20M in cap space. This puts the Chiefs immediately in cap compliance at the expense of Taylor’s services.

It’s not a totally shocking move. Taylor had been heavily penalized in 2025 and was even at the center of a controversy over non-called false starts.

He seemed to be a step ahead, but not for the better. Taylor was a second-round pick out of Florida in 2019, starting his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He is only 28 and will likely have plenty of suitors on the market. His season was cut short due to an elbow injury last season, but is expected to be available at the start of the 2026 season.
