New football rule mandates one-minute sideline wait for treated players

Football's law-making body IFAB will adopt a new rule requiring players who receive treatment on the pitch to wait a full minute on the sidelines before returning, in a bid to combat time-wasting tactics.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) will implement the new regulation during its annual general assembly this Saturday. Currently, football's rulebook doesn't specify exact waiting periods for treated players, allowing leagues to set their own guidelines.

Many in football have long called for measures to prevent players from feigning injuries to waste time. The Premier League introduced a 30-second rule for treated players at the start of the 2023/24 season, but the new global standard will extend this waiting period to 60 seconds.
