NFL Combine origins: From 1976 visits to national event

The NFL Combine evolved from small team visits in the 1970s into a national television event, originating with the New York Jets and formalized by Tex Schramm.

The NFL Combine, now a must-see television event, began in 1976 when the New York Jets invited prospects to their headquarters for interviews and physicals. General manager Tex Schramm later proposed centralizing this evaluation process, leading to the first official combine in Tampa in 1982, which included just 16 teams and 163 players.
